Mumbai: Indian Navy Warship INS Brahmaputra Lays Down On One Side After Catching Major Fire; Sailor Missing

India's one of the most powerful warships, INS Brahmaputra caught fire, when it was undergoing maintenance at the naval dockyard in Mumbai. According to the reports, all persons onboard have been rescued except for a junior sailor, who is missing.

The Navy has started a search operation to find the young sailor. It was also learned that the ship was lying on its side, as it got imbalanced after the incident.

"The fire was brought under control by the ship's crew with the assistance of firefighters from Naval Dockyard, Mumbai and other ships in harbour, by [Monday] morning. Further, follow-on actions including sanitisation checks for assessment of the residual risk of fire were carried out," the navy said in a statement.

The navy added, "Despite all efforts, the ship could not be brought to an upright position. The ship continued to list further alongside her berth and is presently resting on one side".

The warship is 125 meters long, 14.4 meters wide with weights around 5,300 tonnes, and is capable of speed in excess of 27 knots.

"All personnel have been accounted for except one junior sailor, for whom the search is in progress. An inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Navy to investigate the accident," the navy said.

The INS Brahmaputra is first indigenously built class guided missile warship, which was commissioned into the Indian Navy in April 2000.

The warship is a specialist for medium-range, close-range, and anti-aircraft guns, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, and torpedo launchers attacks.
