Mumbai Collector Advocates for Increased Voter Participation in Lok Sabha Polls
In a significant push towards enhancing voter engagement in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Mumbai City district collector Sanjay Yadav emphasized the critical need for increased voter turnout. With the metropolis set to cast its votes on May 20, authorities have set an ambitious target of achieving a 70 per cent voter turnout. The Mumbai City district, encompassing the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat and parts of the Mumbai South Central constituency, boasts over 24.59 lakh registered voters eligible to make their mark across 2,509 polling booths.

During a press conference held at the collector's office in south Mumbai, Yadav made a fervent appeal to citizens aged 18 and above who have not yet registered to do so and participate in the electoral process. He highlighted the ease of registration through the official website voters.eci.gov.in or a dedicated mobile app, alongside assistance available via the helpline number 1950.
The drive to increase voter participation comes in the wake of a mere 48 per cent voter turnout in Mumbai during the 2019 elections, significantly lower than the national average of 67 per cent. This discrepancy was attributed to urban apathy towards elections. To counter this, Yadav outlined several initiatives aimed at boosting voter awareness and participation. These include deploying hoardings and advertisements on BEST civic buses and leveraging celebrities and sportspersons to motivate voters.
Yadav also urged citizens not to schedule holidays on May 20, ensuring they are present to exercise their franchise. He provided a detailed breakdown of the electorate, which includes 13,28,520 males, 11,30,701 females, and 222 transgender persons. Additionally, there are 55,753 senior citizen voters, 5,810 differently-abled electors, and 2,325 young voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years.
The district has identified 89 polling booths as sensitive according to Election Commission guidelines and has taken measures to ensure smooth conduct during the polls. Furthermore, a media cell has been established for constant monitoring of news channels, social media platforms, and newspapers throughout the election period.
With these concerted efforts, authorities are optimistic about reaching their goal of a 70 per cent turnout. The emphasis on voter participation is seen as crucial for a vibrant democracy, ensuring that every eligible citizen has a voice in shaping the future governance of the country.
