End of an Era: Mumbai's Last Diesel-run Double Decker Bus Makes its Final Journey
The last diesel-run double-decker bus in Mumbai made its final trip from Andheri railway station to SEEPZ village. The red diesel-run double deckers, which have been a part of the city for 86 years, are being replaced by battery-operated EV buses. However, three open-deck diesel buses used for sightseeing will remain operational until October 5.
The bustling city of Mumbai bid a nostalgic farewell to the last diesel-run double-decker bus on Friday evening. The final journey of this iconic vehicle, run by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, marked an end to an era that had lasted for 86 years. This poignant moment was felt deeply by Mumbaikars, with many expressing their sentiments on social media platforms.
A Nostalgic Farewell

Industrialist Anand Mahindra encapsulated the sentiment of many when he humorously reported the "theft" of one his most cherished childhood memories to Mumbai Police via Twitter. The bus started its final trip at 11:05 pm from Andheri railway station and ended at SEEPZ village in western suburbs before heading back to Marol depot. As it made its way through the city streets for one last time, people were seen clicking photos and taking selfies with it.
End Of An Era
This bittersweet goodbye marked the end of red diesel-run double-deckers' reign on Mumbai's roads which began 86 years ago. These buses have been an integral part of Mumbai's landscape and public transportation system, often being associated with nostalgia and old-world charm by residents as well as visitors.
The Future Is Electric
In contrast to these diesel giants, new shiny red-and-black battery-operated EV double-deckers have already begun operations since February this year. With environmental concerns becoming more pressing worldwide, a shift towards cleaner modes of transport is inevitable. However, three open-deck diesel-run double-deckers used for sightseeing tours in South Mumbai will continue their operation until October 5th according to BEST officials.
Farewell Celebrations
To commemorate this significant moment, the last diesel-run double-decker was decorated with garlands of flowers and balloons. As it rolled out from BEST's Marol depot in the morning, it caught the attention of onlookers throughout the day. The sight of this adorned bus brought about a wave of nostalgia among Mumbaikars, many of whom took to social media to share their fond memories associated with these buses.
In conclusion, while this farewell marks an end to a significant chapter in Mumbai's public transportation history, it also signifies progress towards more sustainable modes of transport. The transition from diesel-run buses to electric vehicles is not just a step forward in terms of technology but also contributes to efforts for curbing pollution and ensuring environmental sustainability. Though Mumbaikars will miss their beloved red double-deckers, they can look forward to cleaner air and quieter streets as they embrace the new era of electric vehicles.
