Muharram 2025 Date: When is Muharram 2025 Fesitval, July 6 or 7? Find Out
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, signifies the start of the Hijri New Year. In 2025, it commenced in India on Friday, June 27, after the crescent moon was sighted on June 26. This was confirmed by the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee. The 10th day, known as Ashura, will be observed on Sunday, July 6, and is a gazetted holiday in India.
On Ashura, all government offices, schools, banks, and stock exchanges like BSE and NSE will remain closed. This day is significant for both Sunni and Shia Muslims. For Shia Muslims, Muharram is a period of mourning for Hazrat Imam Hussain's martyrdom in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. His sacrifice for justice is honoured throughout this sacred month.

Significance of Muharram in Islam
Muharram holds deep spiritual importance as the second-holiest month after Ramadan. Sunni Muslims also observe this time with solemnity. They commemorate Ashura by fasting, offering prayers, and giving charity. It is believed that several historical events occurred on this day, including Prophet Moses' parting of the Red Sea.
In India, Muharram is observed with great reverence. Shia communities participate in majlis (gatherings), recite elegies (marsiyas), and hold processions. Many engage in self-flagellation to symbolise grief and solidarity with Imam Hussain's suffering. Sunni Muslims mark the day with voluntary fasting and special prayers.
Security Arrangements for Muharram
Due to large gatherings and the sensitive nature of observances, Indian authorities have heightened security measures for Muharram 2025. In Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district alone, over 900 individuals are under preventive restrictions. DGP Rajeev Krishna has instructed police units to deny permissions for new routes or unauthorised practices during Muharram.
The display of weapons is banned during these observances. Strict surveillance through CCTV and drones has been ordered to maintain communal harmony across various states. These measures aim to ensure safety while respecting religious sentiments during this significant period.
Ashura 2025 will be observed on Sunday, July 6 across India. This day holds profound emotional and spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide. It serves as a reminder of sacrifice, justice, and unwavering faith that believers strive to uphold in their lives.
