NSA Invoked Against Accused in MP Cow Slaughter Case; Officials Transferred
In a significant move, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken stringent measures against individuals accused of cow slaughter in Seoni. On Saturday, the state's Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav, announced the invocation of the National Security Act (NSA) against two men linked to the incident. This decision underscores the government's stern stance on cow slaughter, an issue that holds considerable religious and cultural significance in India.

Following the discovery of over 40 cow carcasses in a river and forested area of Seoni, the local authorities arrested five individuals. The Chief Minister, expressing zero tolerance for crimes against cows, has ordered a high-level investigation led by CID ADG Pawan Shrivastava. The investigation aims to ensure that all those involved face rigorous legal action.
In addition to legal measures, administrative changes were also made in response to the incident. Seoni's collector Kshitij Singhal and SP Rakesh Kumar Singh were transferred out of their positions. Sanskruti Jain has been appointed as the new collector, as per a government release.
The police action on Saturday saw four accused presented before a local court. Santosh Kavreti and Ramdas Uike were sent to judicial custody, while Shadab Khan and Wahid Khan were remanded in police custody for three days under NSA. Another accused, Irfan Mohammad, was arrested later that day.
All individuals implicated in this case have been charged under the MP Anti Cow Slaughtering Act, 2004, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and sections of the Indian Penal Code related to provoking communal tensions. In Madhya Pradesh, cow slaughter is a serious offence that can lead to imprisonment of up to seven years.
This incident has once again highlighted the contentious issue of cow slaughter in India, where cows are revered by the majority Hindu population. The government's swift action in this case reflects its commitment to upholding laws protecting cows and maintaining communal harmony.
