Monsoon Knocks Early at Andaman & Nicobar Islands’ Door, Says IMD
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially declared the early onset of the southwest monsoon over parts of the South Bay of Bengal, the South Andaman Sea, the Nicobar Islands, and some areas of the North Andaman Sea.
This marks a significant advancement of the monsoon, arriving several days ahead of its usual schedule. The announcement follows two consecutive days of widespread moderate to heavy rainfall across the Nicobar Islands.

According to IMD data, ongoing rainfall activity and meteorological indicators indicate the progression of the monsoon. Notable observations include a consistent strengthening of westerly winds-exceeding 20 knots at 1.5 km above mean sea level-and their extension up to 4.5 km altitude. Additionally, the Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) has experienced a significant decline over the past two days, which is characteristic of active monsoon phases.
Based on these conditions, the IMD has stated: "The Southwest Monsoon is very likely to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal, and Nicobar Islands around 13th May 2025."
This early onset is significant, as the monsoon typically reaches the Andaman Sea by May 18-19 and the Indian mainland by June 1. This year, it is expected to arrive in Kerala around May 27-nearly a week earlier than usual.
Favourable conditions are expected to persist, aiding further advancement over the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, and the Comorin area. The early monsoon brings much-needed respite from soaring temperatures and raises hopes for a promising agricultural season ahead.
