New Delhi, Oct 27: Jat leader and former Rajasthan minister Hari Singh on Thursday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to run the country on Manu's principles (an ancient Hindu legal code) instead of Gandhian principles.

"The democratic values are being eroded under this government. Therefore, people are returning to the Congress," said Singh, who rejoined the Congress on Thursday along with another Jat leader Subhash Meheriya.

He had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2013 after quitting the Congress in 2011 after differences with the then Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

Meheriya, who served as a minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, said joining the Congress was like a homecoming for him.

A three-time Member of Parliament, Meheriya was denied a Lok Sabha ticket by the BJP in the 2014 general elections and subsequently expelled when he contested from Sikar in Rajasthan as an Independent.

Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee President Sachin Pilot and Leader of Opposition in assembly Remeshwar Dudi were present on the occasion.
