Modi and Trump Commit to Trusted Partnership in First Phone Call Focused on Cooperation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have pledged to enhance India-US relations, focusing on trade, energy, and defence. This commitment was made during their first phone conversation since Trump's inauguration. They discussed global issues, including West Asia and Ukraine, and agreed to collaborate for global peace and security. Both leaders expressed a desire to meet soon.

Modi shared his enthusiasm about the conversation on X, stating, "Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term." He emphasised their dedication to a "mutually beneficial and trusted partnership" aimed at global welfare.
Focus on Comprehensive Partnership
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) highlighted that the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a comprehensive partnership. They explored various aspects of their wide-ranging bilateral relationship, including technology, trade, investment, energy, and defence. The PMO noted that both leaders agreed to remain in contact and meet at a mutually convenient time.
It remains unclear if immigration and tariff issues were discussed during the talks. Concerns have been raised in India regarding the Trump administration's stance on these matters. Trump has previously mentioned imposing 100 per cent tariffs on the BRICS group, which includes India.
Strengthening Economic Ties
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal recently stated that India seeks a more ambitious relationship with the US. He indicated India's readiness to address issues like illegal immigration and trade with the Trump administration. Jaiswal emphasised India's constructive approach to resolving issues in both countries' interests.
The phone call between Modi and Trump occurred six days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz in Washington. Jaishankar also participated in the Quad foreign ministers meeting, marking the Trump administration's first foreign policy engagement.
Emphasis on Bilateral Relationship
During a media briefing in Washington on January 22, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of the bilateral relationship with India for the Trump administration. He noted an agreement between both sides to pursue a bolder and more ambitious partnership. Jaiswal reiterated India's commitment to strengthening economic ties with the US through ongoing communication.
The discussions between Modi and Trump reflect a shared vision for enhancing cooperation across various sectors. Both leaders are committed to working together for mutual benefit and addressing global challenges collaboratively.
