Modi's vanity affair: Mangalyaan cost much lesser than Sardar Patel statue's projected budget

Bangalore, Sept 25: There are many things that rest of the India can learn from

's successful Mars project.

Mangalyaan or Mars Orbiter Mission was executed in a shoestring budget of Rs 450 crore. Interestingly, NDA government's pet project - Statue of Unity along the Sabarmati in Gujarat, will cost at least four times as much as the MOM's budget.

The prime minister who showered praises on ISRO, can learn a lesson or two from the space organisation's budget management.

The Statue of Unity project was given a Rs 200 crore - almost half the cost of the MOM - in the BJP government's first union budget. Reportedly, the Gujarat government is going to give another Rs 500 crore.

But even that amounts to only one third of the total cost of the project, i.e, at least Rs 2,980 crore.

Statue of Unity, a tribute to Sardar Vallabhai Patel, is a 182 metre monument which would be the world's tallest statue. Many have already expressed displeasure with the vanity project, describing it as an absolute waste of money.
