The leaders of around 16 opposition parties met President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday over the allegations of electronic voting machine tampering.

senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad

Speaking to the media after the meeting, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said that allegations of EVM tampering have raised serious questions on the country's electoral process.

Azad also raked up the issue of the GST bill being introduced in Parliament as a money bill which the Congress had vehemently oppossed.

"Key bills are being disguised as money bill to bypass and undermine the constitutional position of Rajya Sabha," he said.

The leaders of the major political parties had earlier met the Election Commission regarding this issue. The opposition leaders are demanding that VVPAT (paper trail of voting) be introduced in all future elections.

The Congress has also been pushing for use of ballot papers instead of EVMs in upcoming elections in view of the alleged tampering.

Politicians from various parties have openly alleged tampering of electronic voting machines in the recently concluded assembly elections in five states with Mayawati and Arvind Kejriwal being at the forefront of such accusations.

Amid all this, senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily had criticised his party for demanding that the use of Electronic Voting Machines be stopped and ballot papers be reintroduced in upcoming elections.

He had said that it was wrong to back some regional parties who are blaming the EVMs for thier dismal performance in the assembly polls.

Moily further dubbed such demands as 'defeatist' mindset and urged the Congress to not join the "populist sway of regional outfits."

According to report, Moily was later ummoned by the Congrerss top brass for slamming his party for opposing EVMs.
