PM Modi's Kuwait Visit: Prime Minister Meets 101-Year-Old Ex-IFS Officer; Receives Grand Welcome
In a groundbreaking event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day journey to Kuwait, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the nation in over four decades. This visit, occurring at the invitation of Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of Kuwait, was not just a diplomatic formality but a significant step in reinforcing the ties between India and Kuwait. Modi's arrival in Kuwait City was met with enthusiasm from the Indian community and respect from local leaders, setting a positive tone for the visit.
During his stay, Modi engaged in various cultural and diplomatic activities that underscored the multifaceted nature of the India-Kuwait relationship. One of the highlights of his trip was meeting Mangal Sain Handa, a 101-year-old retired Indian Foreign Service officer, and his family. This encounter, described by Handa's son as an "experience of a lifetime," symbolized the deep personal connections that underlie the official ties between the two nations.

Strengthening Cultural Ties
Modi's visit also served as a platform for cultural exchange. He met with key figures involved in translating epic Indian texts into Arabic, including Abdullataeef Al Nedef and Abdullah Baron, the duo behind the Arabic versions of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Modi's appreciation for their work highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy in India's foreign relations. Additionally, Modi enjoyed performances by Indian diaspora artists, further celebrating the rich cultural connections between India and Kuwait.
Charting a Future Partnership
A central theme of Modi's visit was the emphasis on building a forward-looking partnership between India and Kuwait. In discussions with Kuwaiti leadership, Modi laid out an agenda aimed at enhancing cooperation across various sectors. He also participated in the opening ceremony of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup, which provided a stage to showcase the strong bonds between the two countries. In his departure statement, Modi reflected on the historical ties, trade relationships, and shared visions for regional peace and prosperity that anchor the India-Kuwait partnership.
The economic aspect of the India-Kuwait relationship was a key focus, with bilateral trade reaching USD 10.47 billion in the 2023-24 financial year. Kuwait's role as a significant supplier of crude oil to India, contributing to 3% of India's energy requirements, underscores the strategic importance of this relationship. Indian exports to Kuwait have surpassed USD 2 billion, and Kuwait's investments in India are over USD 10 billion. The vibrant Indian community in Kuwait, constituting roughly 30% of the labor force and representing 21% of Kuwait's total population, plays a pivotal role in this dynamic, showcasing the deep-rooted connections that go beyond mere diplomatic ties.
This visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Kuwait since Indira Gandhi's trip in 1981, stands as a milestone in the annals of India-Kuwait relations. It not only celebrated the historical ties and shared cultural heritage but also laid the groundwork for a future of mutual growth and collaboration. The visit symbolizes a commitment to deepening the partnership between India and Kuwait, promising a future of shared success and prosperity.
