Rajya Sabha Members Secure Key Positions in Modi's Latest Cabinet
In a significant reshuffle and expansion of the Indian government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new Council of Ministers saw the inclusion of eleven members from the Rajya Sabha, marking a notable composition in the Modi 3.0 era. The ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, witnessed the swearing-in of 72 members to the Council of Ministers, encompassing a diverse group of representatives from both houses of Parliament.

The newly formed council boasts 59 MPs from the Lok Sabha, highlighting a blend of experience and fresh faces in the governance landscape. Notably, two ministers of state, Ravneet Singh Bittu and George Kurian, who are currently not members of either house, are mandated to secure their positions in Parliament within six months following their oath-taking ceremony.
The structure of Modi's latest cabinet includes 30 cabinet ministers, five Ministers of State with Independent charge, and 36 ministers of state. Among the cabinet ministers, five hail from the Rajya Sabha, showcasing a strategic inclusion that represents approximately 15% of the total Council of Ministers. This selection underscores the varied representation within the government, aiming to leverage the expertise and insights from members across both houses.
Notable Rajya Sabha members who have taken up cabinet positions include Jagat Prakash Nadda, Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Hardeep Singh Puri. Additionally, Sarbananda Sonowal and Jyotiraditya Scindia, who are Rajya Sabha members but were elected to the Lok Sabha in this election cycle, bring their rich parliamentary experience to the cabinet.
However, L Murugan's journey reflects a different path; having contested the Lok Sabha election from the Nilgiri constituency and faced defeat against DMK, he still finds a place in the government as a Minister of State. The inclusion of Rajya Sabha members such as Ramdas Athawale, Ramnath Thakur, B L Verma, L Murugan, Satish Chandra Dubey, and Pabitra Margherita as Ministers of State further illustrates the diverse political backgrounds and regional representations being brought into the Modi 3.0 administration.
This reshuffle not only signifies a strategic realignment within the Indian government but also reflects an attempt to infuse new energy and perspectives into the administration. With representatives from both houses of Parliament, the Council of Ministers aims to address various governance challenges with a renewed focus and collaborative effort.
