Mission Divyastra: PM Modi Proud Of DRDO Scientists For Successful Flight Test Of Agni-5 Missile

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed pride in the achievements of India's Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) following the successful test of the Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. The test, known as Mission Divyastra, marks a significant milestone in India's indigenous missile development program.

The Agni-5 missile is an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The successful test of the missile with MIRV technology demonstrates India's advanced missile capabilities and strengthens its deterrence posture.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated the DRDO scientists for their dedication and hard work, which led to the successful test. He emphasized that such achievements showcase India's technological prowess and contribute to the country's security preparedness.

The Agni-5 missile test comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, underscoring the importance of India's indigenous missile development program. The successful test further validates India's status as a responsible nuclear power committed to maintaining peace and stability in the region.

All you need to know about Agni-5, the long-range nuclear capable missile

  • Agni-V missile, a nuclear-capable weapon with a striking range exceeding 5,000 kilometers and high accuracy, can target almost all of Asia, including northern China, and parts of Europe. It holds the record for India's longest-range missile and is the first to be launched at its maximum operational range.
  • This three-stage solid rocket-powered missile can carry a 1.5-tonne nuclear warhead. The Agni-V project aims to bolster India's nuclear deterrence against China, which possesses missiles like the Dongfeng-41 with ranges of 12,000-15,000 km.
  • While this is not the first test of the Agni-V, with similar tests conducted in October 2021 and in 2012, its successful launch signifies a significant advancement in India's strategic deterrence capabilities. The next focus is on the submarine-launched version, the 'K-5', expected to undergo testing soon.
  • The Agni-V missile was launched from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
