Missed CUET? Delhi University To Admit Students Based On Class 12 Marks

According to the Times Now report, the UGC Chairman stated that universities can hold exams to fill seats left vacant after admissions through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).

Delhi University Vice Chancellor, Yogesh Singh, confirmed that the university will use Class XII marks to fill any remaining vacant seats once the regular admission rounds are completed. The results of CUET UG 2024 have been released, and participating universities are expected to announce their cut-off scores soon.

Responding to the UGC directive, Singh told ANI, "We welcome the directive by UGC. We are equally sensitive to the fact that seats in any course should not remain vacant. We will use Class XII marks to fill the vacant seats in UG programs."

The UGC Chairman explained that central universities could either conduct their own entrance exams or admit students based on their qualifying exam marks if seats remain vacant in undergraduate and postgraduate courses after CUET admissions.

This measure aims to prevent a scenario where seats remain unoccupied for an entire academic year, which would not only waste resources but also deny many students the opportunity to pursue higher education in central universities.

He emphasised, "It is not only a waste of resources but also results in the denial of quality higher education to many students who aspire to pursue higher studies in central universities." However, he clarified that the CUET scores will continue to be the primary criterion for student admissions.

"It has come to the notice of the UGC that seats remain vacant in some central universities even after three or four rounds of counselling. To keep the seats vacant for an entire academic year is not only a waste of resources but also results in the denial of quality higher education to many students who aspire to pursue higher studies in central universities," said UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar. Last year, around 5,000 seats remained vacant at DU despite the university employing multiple methods to fill all seats.
