Microsoft Layoffs: Thousands Affected In Global Job Cuts
Microsoft has announced another wave of layoffs, impacting thousands of employees globally. This marks the second significant reduction in workforce within a few months. The company has not specified the exact number of job cuts but indicated it would be less than 4% of its workforce from last year, which translates to about 9,000 positions.
The layoffs will affect various teams worldwide, including the sales division and Xbox gaming business. "We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace," Microsoft stated. The company had around 228,000 employees globally as of June 2024.

Impact on European Divisions
Bloomberg reported that Microsoft's King division in Stockholm, known for Candy Crush, is reducing its staff by 10%, equating to roughly 200 jobs. Other European offices like ZeniMax have also begun notifying employees about job reductions. These cuts follow previous layoffs in May that affected approximately 6,000 workers.
In April, Microsoft informed its staff about plans to use third-party firms for software sales targeting small and mid-sized businesses. The company regularly reviews its organisational structure to ensure investments align with long-term growth strategies.
Previous Layoff Trends
The recent layoffs are part of a broader trend at Microsoft, which saw significant job cuts in 2023 when around 10,000 positions were eliminated. This move coincided with Microsoft's strategic shift towards artificial intelligence to maintain a competitive edge over rivals.
Despite these challenges, Microsoft remains committed to adapting its organisational framework to thrive in an ever-changing market environment. The company's focus on AI and strategic partnerships reflects its efforts to stay ahead in the tech industry.
The decision to lay off employees is part of Microsoft's ongoing evaluation of its business operations. By aligning resources with future growth opportunities, the company aims to enhance efficiency and competitiveness across various sectors.
