MHA Intervention Saves Victims from Costly Online Sextortion Scams

In today’s AI-powered digital world, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has intensified its efforts to safeguard citizens from online sextortion and related cybercrimes. Through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), the Ministry is strengthening coordination between central and state law enforcement agencies to detect, disrupt and deter organised cybercrime networks operating through social media, messaging applications and video communication platforms.

The MHA has adopted a citizen-first approach to address the increasing number of complaints involving sextortion, impersonation and financial exploitation. The 1930 National Cyber Fraud Helpline and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) have been instrumental in enabling citizens to report incidents in real time, ensuring that immediate steps are taken to trace and freeze fraudulent transactions. The Ministry has also directed all states and Union Territories to conduct awareness campaigns through police departments, schools, and community organisations to educate citizens on recognising and avoiding digital blackmail attempts. In one recent case, a seventy-year-old retired government employee from Hyderabad lost ₹39 lakh after being manipulated by an organised sextortion network operating through Facebook and messaging applications. The fraud began with a seemingly harmless friend request from a woman claiming financial distress. Over months, she and her associates posed as family members and police officials, extracting money through emotional pressure and threats. Following his complaint, Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police registered a case, and an investigation led to the identification of a wider syndicate targeting senior citizens.

In another case, a twenty-three-year-old software engineer from Hyderabad fell victim to a similar scheme after receiving an unsolicited WhatsApp video call from an unknown number. The caller used manipulated visuals to blackmail him, demanding payment to prevent the release of a fake video. The victim transferred ₹2.6 lakh before seeking help. With timely intervention by the Cyberabad Cyber Crime Police, the case was traced, and the suspect accounts were frozen. Investigations revealed that the sextortion group operated from multiple states using fake identities and mule accounts.

The Ministry has advised citizens to remain cautious while engaging online and to refrain from accepting friend requests or video calls from unknown individuals. Users are urged not to share personal photographs, banking details or sensitive information with strangers on any digital platform. Through the I4C, the Ministry continues to work closely with state cyber cells, financial institutions and social media intermediaries to prevent misuse of digital platforms for criminal activities. Joint operations have resulted in the identification and blocking of numerous mule accounts and fake profiles linked to sextortion and other online frauds.
