Meghalaya Announces School Closures in Several Districts Amid Cyclone Remal Alert
In response to the impending threat posed by cyclone Remal, the Meghalaya government has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of its citizens, particularly students. Schools across several districts are set to remain closed on Tuesday, following an advisory from the State Disaster Management Authority. This decision comes in light of forecasts predicting extremely heavy rainfall and strong squally winds affecting various parts of the state within the next 24 hours.

The advisory specifically mentions that East Jaintia, East Khasi, South West Khasi, West Jaintia, and West Khasi hills districts are expected to experience severe weather conditions. Winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, are very likely at isolated places over these areas. The government's directive aims to mitigate any potential risks, urging citizens to exercise caution during this period.
An official order from the deputy commissioner highlighted that all educational institutions under the East Khasi Hills District will be closed on May 28 as a precautionary step. Similar directives have been issued for West Khasi, West Jaintia, East Garo, and South West Garo hills districts, underscoring the widespread impact of cyclone Remal.
The state's preparedness for the cyclone was a key agenda in a recent meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong. With Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma participating via video conference, the discussion focused on readiness measures and assistance for the populace. Tynsong assured that the state government is fully equipped to handle the situation and support affected individuals.
Deputy commissioners (DCs) across Meghalaya have been instructed to remain vigilant and proactive in aiding those impacted by the cyclone. The deputy chief minister also advised residents to adhere to government directives and stay indoors for their safety. In Shillong, moderate rainfall has already caused waterlogging in several areas including Lachumiare, Polo, Demseinong, Lawmali, and Sawfurlong, indicating the onset of adverse weather conditions.
This coordinated effort by the Meghalaya government highlights its commitment to safeguarding its citizens against natural calamities. By closing schools in vulnerable districts and ensuring effective communication of safety measures, authorities aim to minimize disruption and prevent any untoward incidents during cyclone Remal's passage.
