Hung assembly likely in Meghalaya, predicts Exit polls

Exit polls by various channels predicted a hung house in Meghalaya. Both the Times Now ETG Exit and India Today-My Axis polls predicted a hung house in the state described as 'Scotland of the east', even though Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad Sangma remained confident of victory.

The ruling party NPP is looking to retain power Meghalaya, predicts Zee News-Matrize exit poll. According to Zee News Exit Polls, the ruling NPP is projected to win 20 seats in the 60-member assembly house while BJP to get 6-11 seats, and Congress 3-6 seats. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress, which is looking to expand beyond Bengal, will bag 8-13 seats in Meghalaya.

Conrad Sangma's NPP will win Meghalaya with 18 to 26 seats, showed Time Now-ETG Research exit poll. Trinamool Congress will win 8-14 seats and Congress two to five seats, it predicted.

According to India Today-My Axis India, the NPP will retain Meghalaya with 18-24 seats. On the other hand, the Congress is expected to win 6-12 seats, the BJP 4-8, and others 4-8. The United Democratic Party is likley to get 8-12 seats.

In 2018, Congress emerged as the single largest party with 21 of 60 seats, the NPP had won 20 seats, formed the government after forging post-poll alliances with regional parties and the BJP, denying Congress its near-continuous hold over the state that was formed in 1972.

It is noteworthy to mention that the ruling NPP is fighting to retain power while the BJP, the Trinamool Congress and other regional parties are vying to bring about a change in government in Meghalaya.

Elections across the 59 assembly seats in Meghalaya concluded today peacefully. Polling in Meghalaya Assembly's Sohiong seat has been deferred after the death of a candidate. According to the Election Commission, nearly 74 per cent voting was recorded in the North Eastern State till 5 pm. Counting of votes will be done on March 2.
