Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma Leads Cabinet to Explore Heritage Living Root Bridge in Siejlieh Village
Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, embarked on a 20 km bus journey with cabinet members to Siejlieh village. The purpose was to experience the heritage living root bridge, a unique feature of this hill state. Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak joined the trip, which included a trek as part of a two-day cabinet retreat.

The retreat, a pioneering initiative, aims to outline Vision 2032 for Meghalaya's growth as it approaches 60 years of statehood. During the visit, the group observed the Umkar Living Root Bridge and met Hally War, who began weaving the bridge in his youth. This bridge is a testament to sustainable architecture and community-driven development.
Preserving Cultural Heritage
Chief Minister Sangma emphasised the government's dedication to preserving traditions and enhancing local infrastructure. He highlighted the living root bridge's cultural significance, which has been integral to the community for over three centuries. "The wisdom of our ancestors led to the creation of this beautiful and functional bridge," he stated.
Hally War, who has served as the village headman for nearly four decades, shared his commitment to maintaining the bridge. "At around 10 years old, I saw the difficulty people faced while crossing the river," he recalled. Inspired by stories from his grandparents about living roots' strength, he initiated this enduring project.
Infrastructure and Tourism Development
During the visit, Chief Minister Sangma announced new infrastructure projects aimed at improving regional connectivity. These include constructing new roads and upgrading school buildings. "We have decided to sanction a new road to improve access for farmers and residents," Sangma said, highlighting efforts to meet rural communities' needs.
The potential for tourism development in the region was also addressed. Approximately 10,000 tourists visit Seij's Living Root Bridge annually. "We recognise the importance of tourism for economic growth in the region," Sangma noted. The tourism department will develop necessary facilities while preserving the area's natural and cultural heritage.
The chief minister praised ongoing efforts to maintain the bridge and acknowledged challenges in sustaining this traditional art form. "This project shows the patience and dedication required to create something sustainable," he remarked. The initiative reflects wisdom passed down through generations.
The government remains committed to addressing rural communities' needs by improving infrastructure and educational opportunities. New school facilities are planned to ensure better education for future generations. These efforts aim to enhance both connectivity and quality of life in Meghalaya's rural areas.
