Meet Vyomika Singh, Wing Commander Who Addressed Media Briefing On Operation Sindoor

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh was one of the two women to brief the media on Operation Sindoor carried out by the Indian armed forces on Wednesday in response to the killing of 26 civilians in Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22.

By making the two women of two different faiths, New Delhi has sent out a message to Pakistan that India cannot be broken on the lines of religion.

Meet Vyomika Singh Wing Commander Who Addressed Media Briefing On Operation Sindoor

Who Is Vyomika Singh?

Vyomika Singh, who is a decorated helicopter pilot in the Indian Air Force, has dreamt of flying since her childhood. Her name itself- Vyomika, meaning "one who resides in the sky" or "daughter of the sky"-seemed to predestinate her path. Determined to achieve her goal, she joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC), pursued engineering, and eventually became the first in her family to join the armed forces.

After getting commissioned as a helicopter pilot in the Indian Air Force, she received a permanent commission in the flying branch on December 18, 2019.

Operational Excellence and Pioneering Roles

With an impressive record of over 2,500 flying hours, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh has piloted Chetak and Cheetah helicopters through some of India's most challenging terrains, including Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast. Her leadership shone during a perilous rescue operation in Arunachal Pradesh in November 2020, where she commanded air support in remote, high-altitude zones amidst severe weather.

Her capabilities extend beyond aviation; in 2021, she demonstrated remarkable endurance as part of a tri-services all-women team that conquered Mt. Manirang (21,650 ft). This expedition earned high praise, notably from the Chief of Air Staff, for highlighting the increasing prominence of women in frontline military roles.

Wing Commander Singh also stepped into the national spotlight during Operation Sindoor's media briefings. Her calm and professional articulation of the Armed Forces' actions during this crisis was a pivotal moment for the visibility of female leadership in the military, showcasing IAF officers as not just pilots but also as vital communicators of India's strategic and humanitarian initiatives.

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh stands as a prime example of the new generation of Armed Forces officers-technically adept, battle-hardened, and a potent symbol of progress.
