Meet Simon Mak: The American Professor Leading India's First AI University As VC
India's Universal AI University (UAIU) has appointed Simon Mak as its vice-chancellor, making him the first foreign national to lead an Indian university during its founding phase. Mak is an esteemed professor and international strategist with a background in Silicon Valley startups and academia. He will work closely with Prof Tarundeep Singh Anand, the university's chancellor, to enhance UAIU's global reputation by developing an innovative AI-centric curriculum while maintaining high ethical standards in education.
Simon Mak's Background And Expertise

Mak began his career as an engineer at Raytheon and Digital Equipment Corporation after earning his BS in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. He later transitioned to Mercury Interactive in Silicon Valley, where he held pivotal roles in applications engineering and regional sales management following their IPO. Mak also ventured into healthcare dot-com startups, Asian business magazines, and a Linux software company based in Dallas, which was eventually acquired by a major Japanese systems integration firm.
In addition to his corporate ventures, Mak pursued higher education, obtaining an MBA in Finance from SMU Cox School of Business and a PhD in Applied Science from SMU Lyle School of Engineering. His research focused on systems engineering and venture financing.
Simon Mak's Impact On Entrepreneurship Education
As Executive Director of the Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship and Professor of Practice at SMU Cox, Mak has significantly influenced entrepreneurship education and research. He oversees numerous community service initiatives such as the Dallas 100 Entrepreneur Awards and the Startup Camp for Teens. Furthermore, he pioneered academic programs like the BBA Specialization and MBA/graduate program in Entrepreneurship, overseeing more than 20 courses taught by adjunct professors.
Mak's research interests include blockchain and esports entrepreneurship. He has developed courses and conducted extensive global research in cities such as London, Berlin, and Kuala Lumpur. His commitment to transformative leadership is evident through his contributions to strategic thinking and corporate entrepreneurship within SMU's Executive Education program.
Mak has received several accolades for his outstanding contributions, including the SMU Cox Teaching Innovation Award and the Global Educator of the Year by the Dallas Global Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on advisory committees, advises student clubs, and chairs initiatives like the USASBE SIG on Tech Entrepreneurship and the Dallas Mayor's Task on Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Mak's entrepreneurial vision and global expertise will play a crucial role in shaping AI education in India at UAIU. His appointment highlights the university's commitment to international standards while reflecting India's willingness to embrace global talent for advancing its educational landscape.
