Reported Helicopter Theft in Meerut Sparks Law and Order Debate

A police complaint regarding an alleged helicopter theft in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, almost escalated into a political controversy. The situation was diffused by the police, who determined it was a misunderstanding after a swift investigation. Ravindra Singh, a pilot with SAR Aviation Service Private Limited, had reported that his company's helicopter was stolen. Singh claimed the helicopter was taken in parts by truck in May and that he was assaulted when confronting the individuals involved.

Meerut Helicopter Theft Sparks Debate

Political Reactions and Social Media Buzz

The incident gained traction on social media, prompting Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to criticise the state's law and order. Yadav posted on X, highlighting the helicopter theft to question airport security and the state's safety measures. "Till now, criminals in Uttar Pradesh were only dismantling the BJP's law and order through killings, robberies, dacoity and rape but now, there is news of a helicopter being dismantled and taken away in a truck in Meerut. This is also a question of airport security. What has happened to the security there?" he wrote in Hindi.

Police Investigation and Findings

Police clarified that Singh's complaint stemmed from his unawareness of the helicopter's sale by SAR Aviation Service Private Limited to another company. Circle Officer Antariksh Jain explained that the new owners legally transported the helicopter by truck on the alleged theft date. "It was found that the helicopter in question was sold by Singh's company to another firm," Jain stated. He confirmed no legal violations occurred during the transport.

Senior Superintendent of Police Meerut Vipin Tanda informed reporters that the incident was not theft but a dispute between two aviation company partners. The complaint was lodged at Partapur police station, where Singh alleged that on May 10, a mechanic reported unauthorised disassembly of the helicopter at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Airstrip.

Allegations of Assault and Company Response

Singh claimed he discovered people dismantling the helicopter upon arrival and that they assaulted and threatened him before taking it away in a truck. However, police investigations did not substantiate these allegations of assault and verbal abuse. When contacted via phone through a number listed on SAR Aviation Service Private Limited's website, Captain G C Pandey, identifying himself as the company's director, expressed ignorance about how the situation began.

"I do not know how it all started. There is no security or safety lapse," Pandey stated. Regarding Singh's complaint, Pandey mentioned he was unaware of it and added, "I do not have a clue. As for Ravindra Singh, he is no longer with our company." Pandey confirmed that the helicopter had been sold in 2023.

The confusion surrounding this incident highlights communication gaps within companies and underscores the importance of clear information dissemination to prevent such misunderstandings in future.
