MCDs Bold Move: 100 Debris Collection Points to Clean Up Delhis Air
In a bid to combat pollution and improve air quality, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is establishing 100 debris collection points across the city. This initiative aims to curb illegal dumping and effectively manage construction and demolition waste, leading to a cleaner and healthier environment for Delhis residents.
In a bid to mitigate pollution caused by construction activities, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is establishing 100 debris collection points across the national capital. This initiative aims to address the significant contribution of construction waste to air pollution in Delhi.

Collaboration and Pilot Project
The MCD, in collaboration with A-PAG and C&D construction and demolition plant concessionaires, has already made 35 of these collection points operational in various zones. Additionally, locations for another 49 points have been identified.
To test the effectiveness of this approach, the MCD conducted a pilot project in 10 wards of the West zone, establishing three dedicated collection sites. The results were promising, showing a significant 46% reduction in illegal dumping of debris.
Expanding the Initiative
Encouraged by the success of the pilot project, the MCD is now expanding the initiative to establish nearly 100 collection points across the city. These sites will be equipped with 12-foot profile sheets, sprinklers, anti-smog guns, and LED signage boards to ensure responsible disposal of construction waste.
Citizens can dump up to 20 tonnes of waste every day at these sites in each ward. They can also contact the C&D plant concessionaire on a helpline for waste collection.
Awareness and Enforcement
To ensure the success of this initiative, the MCD is actively conducting citizen awareness activities and waste transporters sensitisation training. So far, 400 trainings have been conducted, and nearly 100 waste collectors have been sensitised.
The MCD is also taking a proactive approach to curb illegal debris-dumping by imposing fines on transporters engaged in unauthorised disposal on roadsides, water drains, and other prohibited areas. Citizens engaging in construction activities without implementing necessary safeguards or neglecting proper disposal of C&D waste at the designated collection site are also liable to be fined.
Regular Monitoring
To ensure the effectiveness of this initiative, respective deputy commissioners are reviewing the status of C&D waste and collection sites on a fortnightly basis in their zones.
By establishing these debris collection points and implementing various measures, the MCD is taking a comprehensive approach to combat pollution caused by construction activities in Delhi, thereby improving the air quality and overall environment of the city.
