MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar Commits to Preserving Historic Town Hall in Delhi
MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar recently visited the historic Town Hall in Old Delhi, emphasising the corporation's dedication to preserving its heritage. This iconic building, constructed in the 1860s as the Delhi Institute, once served as the headquarters for the city's civic body. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was established in 1958, evolving from the earlier Delhi Municipality.

During his visit, Kumar spent about two hours at this landmark. He participated in a heritage walk and attended a talk on Mughal prince Dara Shukoh. The event was organised by the MCD's Heritage Cell and attracted several civic officials and history enthusiasts. The commissioner reviewed various parts of the Town Hall and assessed its current condition.
Heritage Preservation Efforts
The Town Hall is a crucial part of Delhi's history, and preserving its heritage reflects a conscious society. "The Town Hall is an integral and important part of Delhi's history and preserving its rich heritage is a sign of a conscious society," said Kumar. He reiterated that the MCD will make every possible effort to preserve its heritage.
The building has been neglected for years, leading to significant damage and disuse. The MCD, along with the former North Delhi Municipal Corporation, has proposed several plans for its restoration and adaptive reuse. However, none of these proposals have been implemented yet.
Dara Shukoh's Grave Discovery
Executive Engineer Sanjeev Kumar Singh from the MCD's Heritage Cell shared insights into Dara Shukoh's life during his presentation. Singh claimed to have located Dara Shukoh's grave near Humayun's Tomb in Delhi after extensive research starting in 2016. His findings have received support from many historians despite initial scepticism.
Singh's research involved studying numerous graves in Delhi, Agra, and Lahore through online resources and scholarly books. "It was the Persian wordings in Alamgirnama, the court history of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, which acted as a guide and helped me locate it," Singh explained.
Future Restoration Plans
The municipal commissioner's visit is seen as a positive step towards restoring the Town Hall. When asked about restoration plans, Singh expressed optimism about future efforts. The building requires urgent repair to prevent further deterioration.
Kumar inspected the building's current state during the heritage walk and acknowledged the need for immediate repairs. The MCD released a statement affirming Kumar's commitment to preserving this historic site.
The preservation of Town Hall is vital for maintaining Delhi's rich cultural legacy. Efforts to restore this 19th-century structure are crucial for safeguarding its historical significance for future generations.
