Manmohan Singh’s Rare Childhood Photos With Pakistani Friend Resurface Online

Manmohan Singh, India's former Prime Minister, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and humanity. Among the many stories celebrating his life, one touching account stands out - his emotional reunion in 2008 with Raja Mohammad Ali, a childhood friend from Pakistan.

Born on 26 September 1932 in Gah, a small village in undivided Punjab (now in Pakistan), Singh's early life was shaped by the Partition of 1947. The upheaval forced his family to migrate to India, leaving behind their home and lifelong connections.

When Singh assumed the office of Prime Minister in 2004, news of his ascent reached his native village, rekindling memories for Raja Mohammad Ali, his old schoolmate. Ali, who had shared his childhood with Singh at the village's primary school, where he fondly called him "Mohna," decided to reconnect.

In May 2008, the two friends, now in their seventies, met in Delhi after decades of separation. The reunion was marked by heartfelt embraces and nostalgic conversations. Ali brought with him gifts from Gah - a photograph of their village and a symbolic offering of mitti (earth) and pani (water) from their birthplace. Singh reciprocated with a Titan watch set, a scarf, and a turban, reflecting their enduring bond across borders.

The poignant gesture of exchanging gifts symbolised their shared belief in friendship transcending political and geographical divides, an enduring message that resonates even today.

As India bids farewell to Singh, tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a "distinguished leader" whose wisdom and humility left a lasting impression. Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi praised Singh's egalitarian values and unwavering courage, calling him a "mentor and guide."

Manmohan Singh, India's first Sikh Prime Minister and the first leader since Jawaharlal Nehru to serve consecutive full terms, is remembered as a pillar of modern Indian history. His vision and modest leadership style left a profound impact on the nation.

The picture of two childhood friends, one gifting a Titan watch and the other offering earth and water from a shared past, remains a testament to Singh's belief in humanity's capacity to overcome boundaries. It is this faith in unity and understanding that defines his enduring legacy.
