Pankaj Saran Reflects on Manmohan Singh's Commitment to Peace with Pakistan

Manmohan Singh, who passed away at 92, was remembered for his efforts to foster peace with Pakistan during his time as prime minister. Despite his attempts, these efforts were unsuccessful, according to Pankaj Saran, a former deputy National Security Advisor and close aide. Singh's death was described by Saran as a significant loss, noting Singh's humility and intellectual prowess.

Manmohan Singhs Peace Efforts with Pakistan

Saran highlighted Singh's role in shaping India's economic reforms and his reputation as an economist of global stature. He recalled Singh as a consensus builder and a simple man who never anticipated becoming prime minister but served for a decade. Saran, an IFS officer from the 1982 batch, had served as India's envoy to Russia and held various diplomatic positions, including High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

Diplomatic Efforts and Challenges

Singh's tenure as prime minister was marked by his belief in fostering good relations with the West. He made significant diplomatic efforts, including reaching out to the Gulf and visiting Saudi Arabia, one of the first Indian prime ministers to do so. However, his attempts to improve ties with Pakistan were met with disappointment, especially after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks in 2008.

Saran noted that Singh's efforts were rebuffed by these attacks, which deeply affected him. Despite these challenges, Singh remained committed to enhancing India's international image and was seen as deeply dedicated to the country's development.

Economic Reforms and Global Recognition

Singh is credited with being the architect of India's economic reforms that began in 1991. His commitment to economic growth was evident throughout his career. In foreign policy, he is remembered for transforming India-US relations through the successful nuclear deal with the United States.

Saran praised Singh for his contributions to both economic and foreign policy. He described Singh as a respected figure who was understated yet willing to learn and understand different perspectives. Singh never sought to dominate discussions or dismiss opposing views.

A Legacy Beyond Politics

Singh's legacy extends beyond his political achievements. He was regarded as one of the great leaders of the non-family Congress party. Serving as prime minister for ten years outside of the Nehru-Gandhi family was considered a remarkable accomplishment.

Saran concluded by acknowledging Singh's impact on India's image abroad and his dedication to building the nation. His tenure left a lasting mark on both domestic and international fronts.
