Manmohan Singh Remembered for Humility and Economic Reforms by Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Singh, known for his role in India's economic reforms, passed away at AIIMS Delhi at the age of 92. Sarma highlighted Singh's humility and resistance to the allure of power.

Reflecting on his relationship with Singh, Sarma mentioned their acquaintance since 1991 when Singh was first elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam. "Dr Sahab embodied humility and never surrendered to the trappings of power. In all my interactions with him, his simplicity and decency combined with his intellectual prowess always stood out," Sarma shared in a post on X.
Singh's Contributions to India
Sarma recalled his interactions with Singh during the latter's tenure as Prime Minister, particularly concerning Assam's issues. He noted Singh's attentive listening and strong commitment to social matters. Singh's journey from humble beginnings in post-partition India to serving in various esteemed roles was also acknowledged by Sarma.
Singh's significant impact on India's economy was emphasised by Sarma, who stated that many Indians would remember Singh for introducing a free market economy and moving away from restrictive socialist policies. "In his demise, the nation has lost a great patriot, an exceptional scholar, an unconventional politician and a fine statesman," Sarma remarked.

Sarma extended his heartfelt condolences to Gursharan Kaur, Singh's family, and well-wishers. He recognised Singh as a remarkable leader whose contributions will be remembered by generations. The Chief Minister's tribute highlighted both personal admiration and national respect for Singh's legacy.
