Manmohan Singh, Renowned Architect of India's Economic Reforms, Dies at 92
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, known for his pivotal role in India's economic reforms, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi announced his death. Singh was admitted to the emergency ward around 8:30 PM after losing consciousness at home earlier that day.

Despite immediate resuscitation efforts at home and subsequent medical intervention at AIIMS, Singh could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 9:51 PM. He had been suffering from age-related health issues for several months. Singh leaves behind his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters.
Economic Reforms Architect
Singh's tenure as Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao marked a significant turning point in India's economic history. His 1991 reforms helped India escape bankruptcy and initiated economic liberalisation. These changes included abolishing the licence raj and opening sectors to private and foreign investment.
As a former Reserve Bank of India governor, Singh is credited with allowing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), devaluing the rupee, moderating taxes, and privatising public sector companies. His policies are seen as transformative for India's economic trajectory.
Political Legacy
Singh served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led UPA government. Despite being described as a reluctant politician, he was known for his consensus-building approach. His leadership saw significant achievements like the Indo-US nuclear agreement in 2008, which bolstered India's global standing.
However, his tenure was also marred by allegations of corruption, including the coal scam and the 2G telecom scam. These controversies weakened the UPA government and paved the way for the BJP's victory in the 2014 elections.
Tributes and Reflections
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Singh, acknowledging his wisdom and humility. Modi noted Singh's rise from humble beginnings to becoming a respected economist who left a lasting impact on India's economic policies. "His interventions in Parliament were also insightful," Modi said on X.
President Droupadi Murmu hailed Singh as "one of the greatest sons of Bharat" for his contributions to economic reform. Former Deputy National Security Adviser Pankaj Saran remembered him as a humble leader who excelled in consensus-building.
Final Years and Criticisms
In his later years, Singh remained politically inactive but continued to critique government policies. He was vocal against demonetisation in 2016, calling it "organised loot" and "legalised plunder." In May this year, he criticised Narendra Modi for diminishing the Prime Minister's office's stature through divisive rhetoric.
Singh defended his government's record during his tenure, asserting that compromises made were on peripheral issues rather than national problems. He hoped history would judge him more kindly than contemporary media did.
N.N. Vohra, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir during Singh's tenure, described him as a rare political leader with exceptional intellect and humility. Vohra noted Singh's ability to tackle complex issues while listening to all perspectives.
Singh concluded his parliamentary career in the Rajya Sabha on April 3 without ever winning a popular vote for office. His passing marks the end of an era defined by intellectual capability and integrity in Indian politics.
