Manmohan Singh Reflects on Leadership and Historical Judgment in 2014 Press Conference
In the months leading up to his departure from office in 2014, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh defended his leadership. He expressed confidence that history would judge him more favourably than the media did at the time. During a press conference in January 2014, Singh stated, "I do not believe that I have been a weak Prime Minister... I honestly believe that history will be kinder to me than the contemporary media or for that matter the Opposition in Parliament."

Singh, who served as prime minister for a decade until Narendra Modi assumed office on May 26, 2014, faced criticism for perceived indecisiveness. Responding to these critiques, he said he had done his best given the political circumstances. "It is for history to judge what I have done or what I have not done," Singh remarked, addressing questions about his leadership.
Leadership and Criticism
During the press conference, Singh also criticised BJP's then-prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. He referenced the 2002 Gujarat riots under Modi's tenure as Chief Minister. The BJP had portrayed Modi as a strong leader while criticising Singh's leadership as weak ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
Singh questioned the notion of strength associated with Modi's leadership style. "If you measure the strength of Prime Minister by presiding over mass massacre of innocent citizens on streets of Ahmedabad, then I do not believe in it.... I do not think that this kind of strength this country needs least from its Prime Minister," he asserted.
Coalition Government Experience
Reflecting on his two terms as prime minister during UPA I and UPA II, Singh highlighted Congress's ability to manage coalition governments. He argued that while some compromises were made, they were on minor issues rather than significant national problems. This experience dispelled doubts about Congress's capability to lead coalitions.
Singh also addressed perceptions within Congress regarding his leadership. When asked if there were calls for him to step down due to inadequacies during his tenure, he responded, "Nobody has asked me to step down because of any inadequacy that characterised my tenure as prime minister."
Singh expressed confidence in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) continuing in power after the elections. He stated, "I have full confidence that the next Prime Minister will be from the UPA... It will be disastrous for the country to have Narendra Modi as Prime Minister... I sincerely believe what Narendra Modi is saying is not going to materialise."
Despite facing criticism during his tenure, Singh remained steadfast in his belief that he had fulfilled his duties effectively under challenging circumstances. His remarks highlighted both his defence against criticisms and his vision for India's future leadership.
