Manmohan Singh Criticises Narendra Modi for Diminishing Public Discourse in 2024 Lok Sabha Elections
Despite his frail health, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's political acumen was evident during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly degrading public discourse with divisive speeches. Singh urged Punjab voters to support Congress, promising a future where democracy and the Constitution are protected. He emphasised that only Congress could ensure a progressive, growth-oriented future.

Singh strongly opposed the BJP's Agnipath scheme for the Armed Forces, describing it as a threat to national security. He argued that the scheme undermines patriotism by limiting service to four years, which he saw as fake nationalism. Singh's letter to Punjab voters, released on May 30, highlighted these concerns and promised to abolish the Agniveer scheme if Congress came to power.
Criticism of Modi's Leadership
In his critique of Modi's leadership, Singh accused him of using hate speech that divides society. "Modi ji has indulged in the most vicious form of hate speeches," Singh stated. He claimed Modi was the first prime minister to lower the dignity of public discourse and office. Singh also refuted allegations that he favoured any community over another, attributing such divisive tactics solely to the BJP.
Singh appealed to voters to choose love, peace, and harmony over discord. He urged young voters to be cautious and vote for a brighter future with Congress. "Only Congress can ensure a growth-oriented progressive future," he reiterated. Singh stressed that India stands at a critical juncture, with one last chance to protect democracy from what he described as a despotic regime.
Challenges Faced by Punjab
Singh praised Punjabis for their courage and democratic spirit, which he believed could safeguard India. He criticised the BJP government for its treatment of Punjab and its people over the past decade. He highlighted the plight of 750 farmers who died during protests against farm laws imposed without consultation. Singh condemned Modi's derogatory remarks about farmers in Parliament.
The former prime minister also addressed economic issues under BJP rule. He pointed out unprecedented unemployment and inflation, leading to increased inequality at a century-high level. While Congress-UPA had increased purchasing power despite challenges, Singh noted that BJP's misrule had depleted household savings to a 47-year low.
Singh concluded by urging voters to save India from forces of discord and support development and inclusive progress. "People of India are seeing through all of this," he said, emphasising the need for unity against divisive narratives. His appeal aimed to rally support for Congress as a means to protect India's democratic values and ensure a prosperous future.
