Over 188,000 Affected by Manipur Floods, 24,000 Houses Damaged

In the wake of Cyclone Remal, Manipur has experienced severe flooding, affecting over 188,000 residents and causing significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture. The state's response to this natural disaster has been swift, with efforts focused on relief, search, and rescue operations to mitigate the impact on affected communities.

Manipur Floods Affect Thousands

The relentless rainfall following Cyclone Remal has left a trail of destruction across Manipur, with 24,265 houses reported damaged. The state's Minister for Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management, Awangbou Newmai, highlighted the extensive efforts to provide relief to the affected populations. A total of 18,103 individuals have been evacuated to safer grounds, with 56 relief camps established to shelter the displaced. The agricultural sector has also taken a hit, with approximately 401 hectares of crops affected by the floods.

Newmai's coordination with key officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary and Deputy Commissioners of Imphal West & East, underscores the government's proactive stance in addressing the crisis. The distribution of relief materials across several districts—Imphal East, Imphal West, Bisnupur, Noney, Churanchanpur, Senapati, and Kakching—demonstrates a comprehensive approach to aid distribution.

Human Toll and Infrastructure Damage

The human cost of the floods has been significant, with three fatalities reported and nine individuals sustaining injuries. The search continues for one missing person since the onset of the floods on May 29. Chief Minister N Biren Singh confirmed that breaches in river embankments at 18 locations have exacerbated the flooding situation. However, efforts to seal these breaches have been largely successful, with 17 out of 18 spots now secured.

In light of the severe flooding and to facilitate emergency response efforts, the state government declared a two-day public holiday for all state offices until May 31. This measure aims to ensure public safety and encourage residents to remain indoors unless it is absolutely necessary to venture outside.

Manipur's battle against the aftermath of Cyclone Remal highlights the challenges posed by natural disasters in vulnerable regions. The state's comprehensive response, from immediate relief efforts to strategic long-term planning for recovery, showcases a determined approach to overcoming adversity. As communities begin to rebuild in the aftermath of the floods, the resilience and solidarity among the affected populations remain evident.
