Manipur Congress Leaders Demand Action Against P Chidambaram Over Manipur Autonomy Remarks

Following a social media post by senior Congress leader P Chidambaram that suggested regional autonomy for various ethnic groups in Manipur as a solution to the state's crisis, a group of Congress leaders from Manipur reached out to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge. They requested disciplinary action against Chidambaram. The post, which has since been deleted, critiqued the deployment of additional CAPF personnel as ineffective and called for the removal of Manipur's Chief Minister Biren Singh, describing him as the crisis's catalyst. Chidambaram emphasized the need for regional autonomy among Manipur's ethnic communities—the Meitei, Kuki-Zo, and Naga—to coexist peacefully within a single state.

The letter to Kharge was penned by 10 Manipur Congress leaders, including serving MLAs, past ministers, and former presidents of the Manipur Congress. They collectively expressed their disapproval of Chidambaram's remarks, highlighting that his statements were particularly unsuitable given the current heightened tensions, public mourning, and sensitivities in Manipur. They underscored the Congress party's commitment to preserving the unity and territorial integrity of Manipur and urged immediate action against Chidambaram.

P Chidambaram and Mallikarjun Kharge

Before the removal of the controversial post, Manipur Congress Chief K Meghachandra had publicly requested Chidambaram to delete it, pointing to the volatile and sensitive situation in Manipur. Additionally, former Manipur Chief Minister and Congress leader Okram Ibobu Singh clarified that Chidambaram's opinions were personal and did not reflect the views of the state's party unit. Singh detailed his immediate communication with Kharge upon noticing the post, leading to Kharge's prompt discussion with senior leaders and Chidambaram himself, which resulted in the post's deletion.

On the other hand, Manipur's Chief Minister Biren Singh critiqued Chidambaram's approach, attributing the origin of the conflict to Chidambaram's 2008 decision to enter into a Suspension of Operation agreement with the Zomi Revolutionary Army. This accusation underscores the complex historical and political dynamics contributing to Manipur's ongoing conflict and the varied perspectives on its resolution.

This incident highlights the delicate balance political figures must maintain when addressing sensitive regional issues, especially when opinions aired publicly can ignite further controversy or misunderstanding among affected communities. The collective response from Manipur's Congress leaders emphasizes their stance on unity and the importance of cautious and respectful discourse concerning the state's complex interethnic relations and ongoing strife.
