Mumbai Man Booked for Rape Under False Promise of Marriage

A 36-year-old man has been charged with raping a Mumbai-based woman under the false promise of marriage in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district, police reported on Tuesday. Two women were also implicated for allegedly abusing the victim over the phone, issuing threats, and advising her against marrying the accused, an official stated.

The incident came to light when the 25-year-old victim lodged a complaint at Chiplun Police Station. She accused Aditya Parab of raping her under the pretext of marriage. The case has since been transferred to Nehru Nagar Police Station in central Mumbai with Zero FIR, according to the official.

Accused Met Through Family Friend

The complainant revealed that she met Parab in 2022 through a mutual friend of her father, who was searching for a groom for his daughter. Following meetings between both families, the victim decided to marry Parab, who was employed with a private company in Brazil and returned home in August 2023.

Upon his return, marriage discussions resumed, but Parab avoided committing by citing various reasons. On July 5, while at Parab's residence, he established a physical relationship with her. The next day, they went to Guhagar in Ratnagiri district and stayed at a resort where they got intimate again.

Accused Avoids Commitment

After returning to Mumbai, Parab began avoiding the victim and postponed marriage talks by citing reasons such as training and loan burdens. Realising she had been deceived, the victim approached the police and filed a rape complaint against him.

The police have booked two women for allegedly abusing and threatening the victim over the phone. They reportedly advised her not to marry Parab. The investigation is ongoing as authorities gather more evidence related to the case.

The case highlights issues around false promises of marriage leading to exploitation. It underscores the importance of legal recourse for victims of such deceitful acts.
