Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu Visits India to Strengthen Bilateral Relations Amid Economic Challenges
Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu arrived in India on Sunday for a four-day state visit aimed at mending strained relations between the two countries amidst an economic crisis in the Maldives. During his stay, Muizzu will engage in discussions with Indian leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to explore potential agreements in the infrastructure sector.

Muizzu's visit, which extends until Thursday, includes stops in Mumbai and Bengaluru for business events. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed optimism about the talks with Prime Minister Modi, stating on X, "Pleased to call on President Muizzu today at the start of his State Visit to India. Appreciate his commitment to enhance India-Maldives relationship. Confident that his talks with PM Modi tomorrow will give a new impetus to our friendly ties."
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The relationship between India and the Maldives has been tense since Muizzu assumed office in November, known for his pro-China stance. However, during this visit, discussions will focus on bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest. This marks Muizzu's second visit to Delhi since attending Modi's swearing-in ceremony in June.
Muizzu's election campaign last year centred around reducing India's military presence in the Maldives. He requested New Delhi to withdraw its military personnel by May this year. Despite initial tensions, Muizzu has softened his anti-India rhetoric and dismissed ministers who criticised Prime Minister Modi.
Economic Challenges and Support
The Maldives is currently facing significant economic challenges, prompting India to extend crucial financial assistance. This includes rolling over a USD 50 million Treasury Bill for another year to support the Maldivian government. The country's economic woes are exacerbated by rising external debt, a high debt-to-GDP ratio, and dwindling foreign exchange reserves.
Credit rating agencies Moody's and Fitch have recently downgraded the Maldives due to these financial difficulties. The ongoing visit by President Muizzu is seen as an opportunity to strengthen ties with India and seek further support amid these economic challenges.
As Muizzu continues his visit, both nations aim to rebuild their relationship through dialogue and cooperation. The outcomes of these discussions could play a crucial role in shaping future interactions between India and the Maldives.
