Maharashtra Leaders Discuss Power-Sharing Pact with Amit Shah Following Mahayuti Election Victory
Maharashtra's outgoing Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, along with his deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss a power-sharing agreement. This meeting follows the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance's significant win in the state assembly elections. Fadnavis, who previously led the BJP to surpass the 100-seat mark in the 288-member assembly, is seen as a leading candidate for Maharashtra's top executive role.

Alliance Discussions and Leadership Dynamics
Ajit Pawar, NCP chief and deputy chief minister, mentioned that ministerial positions for alliance partners—BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP—would be decided during the meeting with Shah. Leaders anticipate forming a new government by December 2. The discussions between Fadnavis, Shah, Nadda, Pawar, and Shinde lasted over an hour. Fadnavis expressed gratitude to Amit Shah for his support during the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha Elections 2024.
Shinde arrived in Delhi with senior party members Uday Samant and Shambhuraj Desai. Before the coalition meeting, Fadnavis met Ajit Pawar at NCP leader Sunil Tatkare's residence. Shinde also had a separate meeting with Shah in Delhi. He assured reporters that he would not hinder government formation and would follow decisions made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah.
Political Speculations and Caste Considerations
The political scene is rife with speculation about the BJP's central leadership considering social dynamics in Maharashtra before deciding on the chief minister. This opens up possibilities for leaders from OBC and Maratha communities within the BJP. Shiv Sena leaders advocate for Shinde's continuation as chief minister due to his successful initiatives like Ladki Bahin and his citizen-focused governance approach.
Caste dynamics play a significant role in choosing the chief minister, as most of the 288 MLAs belong to the Maratha community. Fadnavis, a Brahmin, first became chief minister in 2014 and briefly in 2019. If RSS influences prevail, Fadnavis' chances of becoming CM are strong. A close aide of Shinde indicated he might not accept a deputy CM role in the new setup.
Sanjay Shirsat, Shiv Sena MLA and spokesperson, stated that while Shinde would join the cabinet, he is unlikely to be deputy CM due to his previous role as chief minister. The Shiv Sena plans to nominate another leader for this position. Shinde's son, MP Shrikant Shinde, expressed pride in his father's commitment to alliance dharma by prioritising collective governance over personal ambition.
Election Outcomes and Future Prospects
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance achieved a remarkable victory in recent state assembly elections by securing 230 seats out of 288. Recovering from Lok Sabha election losses, BJP won 132 Assembly seats—the highest among Mahayuti constituents. Shinde's Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP also performed well; Sena won 57 seats while NCP secured 41.
The Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) faced setbacks with one of its poorest performances in assembly polls—winning only 16 seats. Sharad Pawar's NCPSP managed just 10 seats whereas Uddhav Thackeray's UBT won 20 seats. The Maharashtra assembly elections took place on November 20 with results announced on November 23.
On Tuesday, Eknath Shinde resigned as chief minister but was asked by Governor C P Radhakrishnan to continue as caretaker until a new government forms. This transition period marks an important phase for Maharashtra's political landscape as parties negotiate power-sharing agreements amidst evolving dynamics within alliances.
