Maharashtra Polls: NCP Sharad Pawar's Workers Stop Chhagan Bhujbal From Entering Polling Booth
In Maharashtra's Yevla constituency, workers from Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction obstructed Chhagan Bhujbal from entering a polling booth. Bhujbal, who is contesting the assembly election in this Nashik region known for its onion market, faced resistance due to his recent shift to the Mahayuti alliance. This coalition includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP.
During the election, some NCP workers voiced concerns about Bhujbal entering the booth multiple times. His switch to Mahayuti was controversial, especially after journalist Rajdeep Sardesai claimed in a book that Bhujbal joined to avoid an Enforcement Directorate investigation related to alleged money laundering. Bhujbal denied these allegations.

Political Allegiances and Controversies
Bhujbal emphasised his contributions to Yevla over two decades, focusing on water management and infrastructure development. "I have worked in Yevla for 20 years and helped the place develop in water management and infrastructure. My caste and religion is only development. Even my party believes the same," he told NDTV. He dismissed caste-based politics, asserting that locals value his developmental work over caste identity.
In July 2023, Ajit Pawar led a faction of NCP members to join forces with BJP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena under Mahayuti. This move further complicated internal party dynamics. The voter turnout in Maharashtra reached 45.5% by 3 pm during this election.
NCP Dynamics and Electoral Strategies
NCP spokesperson Mahesh Tapase criticised leaders who admitted joining ruling parties to escape investigations. "Such admissions only reinforce the belief that the BJP operates as a 'washing machine' where corrupt leaders enter and emerge spotless," he remarked. This statement reflects ongoing tensions within political circles regarding integrity and accountability.
The Mahayuti alliance has strategically fielded candidates across various constituencies: BJP in 149 seats, Shiv Sena in 81, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP in 59 constituencies. Meanwhile, the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition has Congress contesting 101 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) with 95 candidates, and NCP (SP) fielding 86 candidates.
Bhujbal remains steadfast in his commitment to development-focused politics despite facing opposition from within his former party ranks. His emphasis on infrastructure improvements aims to resonate with voters prioritising progress over traditional political divides.
