Shivaji Statue Collapse Sparks Political Controversy in Maharashtra Ahead of Polls

BJP leader and former Union minister Narayan Rane on Monday accused the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) of creating divisions in Maharashtra over the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue. The statue, located at Rajkot fort in Malvan tehsil, fell on August 26, eight months after it was unveiled by PM Modi on Navy Day.

Accusations Against Opposition

Rane, a former chief minister, also accused Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut of inciting tensions over the incident. "The three parties Shiv Sena UBT, Congress and NCP SP are working to create a wedge in the state over the collapse of the statue ahead of the state polls," Rane stated. He described the incident as unfortunate and criticised the opposition's actions.

Protest March by MVA

On Sunday, the MVA held a protest march from Hutatma Chowk to Gateway of India to express their discontent over the statue's collapse. Opposition leaders participating in the march criticised both the Union and state governments for their handling of the situation. Thackeray dismissed Modi's apology as arrogant, while Pawar claimed that the statue incident was an example of corruption.

Criticism of Sharad Pawar

Targeting NCP SP chief Sharad Pawar, Rane pointed out that despite being a four-time chief minister, Pawar failed to address the issue of Maratha reservation. This criticism highlights ongoing political tensions and unresolved issues within Maharashtra's political landscape.

The collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue has sparked significant controversy and political debate in Maharashtra. The incident has become a focal point for criticism against both state and central governments, with accusations of corruption and mismanagement being levelled by opposition leaders.

The political fallout from this incident is likely to influence upcoming state assembly polls, as parties leverage the event to gain support and criticise their opponents. The situation remains tense as leaders continue to exchange accusations and seek to sway public opinion in their favour.
