Maharashtra MPCB suspension ordered after officials miss Minister Pankaja Munde meeting

Two Maharashtra Pollution Control Board officials were suspended after pro-tem Speaker Dilip Lande directed action over their absence from a meeting called by Environment Minister Pankaja Munde. The matter arose during a legislative discussion on Chandrapur pollution, and the suspension file was sent for approval to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Two Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) officials were suspended on Friday after a direction from the pro-tem Speaker in the legislative assembly. The move drew attention as the MPCB is led by Siddhesh Kadam of the Shiv Sena. The board works under the environment department, which is headed by BJP minister Pankaja Munde.

The suspension followed claims that the officials skipped a meeting called by Munde on pollution issues. While replying during a discussion on pollution in Chandrapur district in eastern Maharashtra, Munde said the officers did not turn up. The issue was raised in the House, leading to quick action from the Chair.

MPCB suspension order and pro-tem Speaker Dilip Lande

Pro-tem Speaker Dilip Lande issued the order on Thursday evening. The direction covered MPCB member secretary M Devender Singh, an IAS officer, and joint director Satish Padval. Lande, a Shiv Sena MLA, said the absence showed serious neglect. Lande also said it showed disrespect to elected representatives in the legislature.

Sources said the administrative process moved fast after the order. Within a day, officials placed a file recommending suspension before Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. After approval, the suspensions were carried out on Friday. The speed of the decision led to discussion in political circles.

MPCB and privilege motion linked to Pankaja Munde

On Friday, BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar moved a breach of privilege motion against the MPCB. The motion alleged the board failed to follow the minister’s directions. The step added pressure on the MPCB leadership. It also kept focus on the missed meeting linked to pollution in Chandrapur.

Lande defended the order and rejected suggestions that the role was limited. Lande said, "It doesnt matter that I was merely a pro-tem Speaker. I was in the chair, and action was taken for not respecting the orders of a minister and not doing ones duty.\"

The case also highlighted the MPCB’s leadership and political links. Siddhesh Kadam, who heads the board, is from the Shiv Sena, a ruling ally. Siddhesh Kadam is the son of senior Shiv Sena leader and former minister Ramdas Kadam. Siddhesh Kadam is also the brother of Minister of State Yogesh Kadam.
