The Congress party has accused the BJP-led Maharashtra government of creating trivial controversies to divert attention from significant issues, including caste tensions and personal freedoms. State Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal highlighted the government's focus on nonsensical debates rather than addressing pressing concerns.

The Congress leader criticised the government's attempts to control personal habits, such as dictating when people should eat meat or what spices to use. He argued that these issues have no place in Maharashtra and accused the government of intentionally engineering debates to divert public attention. "Instead of instigating kabutar jihad, the government should take a building from minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha to house pigeons and provide a hospital for the birds," he said.

Controversies Over Pigeon-Feeding

The debate over kabutarkhanas, or pigeon-feeding spots in Mumbai, has been ongoing due to health concerns. Lodha, whose family is involved in construction, opposed a complete ban on these spots. Sapkal highlighted the health risks associated with pigeon droppings and feathers, citing his friend Narendra Lanjewar's death from a respiratory infection as an example.

Sapkal also targeted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, contrasting him with former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Deshmukh had established a riot control team for law and order situations. In contrast, Sapkal alleged that Fadnavis created a team that incites social unrest in cities like Nashik, Nagpur, and Pune.

Allegations Against BJP's Land Deals

Sapkal accused the BJP of granting more than half of Mumbai's land to the Adani group through projects like Dharavi and Motilal Nagar redevelopment. He also criticised the ban on meat sales on Independence Day in some cities, claiming it was an attempt to avoid discussions about the BJP's past.

He alleged that leaders of the BJP's predecessor, Jana Sangh, did not participate in the freedom movement but accepted pensions from the British. When asked about NCP leader Dhananjay Munde staying in his official bungalow after resigning as a minister, Sapkal suggested Munde might have been promised re-induction into the cabinet.

Health Concerns Over Kabutarkhanas

Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat expressed concerns about pigeon-feeding affecting public health. He stated that while kindness to animals is important, it should not come at the cost of people's health. "If you are living on the 75th floor after earning ‘Punya’ and the person living there will have to live with lung diseases, what will we think of? I don’t want to target any religion but health should be given a thought," Thorat said in Nashik regarding the kabutarkhana issue.

Sapkal described Fadnavis as one of Maharashtra's most helpless chief ministers for failing to remove inefficient ministers. The Congress continues to criticise the BJP for its handling of various issues in Maharashtra.
