Maharashtra Sets Up Corporation to Support Vitthal Devotees
The Maharashtra government has announced the formation of a new corporation, Mukhyamantri Warkari Mahamandal, to support Warkaris and Kirtankars. This decision comes just before ‘Ashadhi Ekadashi’. The social justice department issued a government resolution (GR) detailing this initiative.

Every year, countless Warkaris, including peasants, labourers, and farmers, embark on a pilgrimage to Pandharpur. This tradition has been followed for centuries. The headquarters of the new corporation will be in Pandharpur, known for the Vitthal Rukmini temple in Solapur district.
Focus on Pilgrim Facilities
The corporation aims to enhance pilgrim sites and provide essential services like medical aid, food, security, and insurance. It will also work on improving roads used for ‘palkhi’ or palanquin processions. Additionally, efforts will be made to clean the Chandrabhaga, Indrayani, and Godavari rivers.
According to the GR, the number of "dindis" or processions has grown over time. This has increased the need for detailed planning of "Wari management". The concept of forming the Warkari Mahamandal was proposed to the state cabinet and approved in a meeting on 11th July 2024.
Environmental Initiatives
The corporation will also focus on environmental initiatives. One of its goals is to make the Chandrabhaga, Indrayani, and Godavari rivers free from pollution. This is part of a broader effort to improve conditions for pilgrims.
The establishment of Mukhyamantri Warkari Mahamandal reflects the government's commitment to supporting religious traditions and ensuring the well-being of pilgrims. By providing better facilities and services, the corporation aims to enhance the overall experience for Warkaris and Kirtankars.
This new initiative is expected to bring significant improvements in the management of pilgrimages and the development of related infrastructure. The focus on environmental sustainability also highlights the importance of preserving natural resources while supporting cultural practices.
