Maharashtra Election: MVA Seat-Sharing Talks Hit Roadblock; Nashik, Vidarbha, Mumbai Seats In Dispute

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, comprising the Shiv Sena's Thackeray faction, Congress, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is currently facing a deepening crisis over seat-sharing discussions ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections.

Despite multiple meetings, including a marathon 10-hour session at the Trident Hotel, no agreement has been reached, reported News18.

Maha Polls MVA s Seat-Sharing Impasse

Tensions have escalated, with leaders from the Thackeray faction reportedly approaching the Congress high command in Delhi, signalling increasing frustration and concerns about the alliance's future.

Seats at centre of dispute

The core issue revolves around the allocation of key seats in regions such as Vidarbha, Mumbai, and Nashik. A significant point of contention is Nashik West, where the Thackeray faction is backing Sudhakar Badgujar's candidacy. However, the Congress remains firm on fielding its own candidate. During a late-night meeting, Congress leader Nana Patole's insistence on Nashik West reportedly led to Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut walking out. This incident exemplifies the growing friction within the alliance.

Vidarbha has also emerged as a key battleground in the ongoing seat-sharing discussions. The Thackeray faction has laid claim to 12 critical seats, including constituencies such as Armori, Chimur, and Ramtek, which are currently held either by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or independent candidates. The Thackeray faction argues that since these seats are not held by MVA incumbents, their claim is reasonable. However, the Congress has been reluctant to concede several of these constituencies.

In addition to Vidarbha and Nashik West, other contentious seats include South Nagpur, where Congress candidate Girish Pandav is seeking a ticket, but the Thackeray faction has also shown interest. In Yavatmal, both the Congress and NCP are competing for the seat, further complicating the negotiations. Similarly, the Akola West constituency, traditionally contested by Congress, is now being sought by Rajesh Mishra of the Thackeray faction.

Lol Sabha Adjustment issues

One of the underlying reasons for the deadlock is the seat adjustment made during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. At that time, the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena had given up its Ramtek and Amravati Lok Sabha seats to the Congress as part of the alliance's strategy to defeat the BJP.

Now, with the assembly elections approaching, the Thackeray faction feels entitled to a greater share of the seats, particularly in Vidarbha, where it seeks to contest constituencies such as Gadchiroli, Bhandara, and Arjuni Morgaon. However, Congress has refused to relent, citing its strong electoral interests in these areas, further aggravating the tensions.

The situation is equally complicated in constituencies such as Karanja and Jalgaon Jamod, where Sharad Pawar's NCP is advocating for its candidates, despite Congress holding these seats. In Digras, Congress veteran Manikrao Thakre's son is pushing for a ticket, while the Thackeray faction supports Pawan Jaiswal.

Amid rising tensions, the Thackeray faction, feeling increasingly marginalised, has called an emergency meeting at Matoshree. Uddhav Thackeray is expected to discuss the future course of action with party leaders. This meeting, scheduled for 1 pm, could determine whether the faction continues negotiations with the MVA or explores other options.

The ongoing impasse threatens to delay the finalisation of seat-sharing arrangements, with the assembly elections fast approaching. Should the MVA leaders fail to resolve their differences, the alliance could face a serious risk of collapse, which would be a major setback for the opposition's efforts to present a united front against the BJP in Maharashtra.

The coming days are set to be critical for the MVA as they navigate this political minefield. If the deadlock persists, the Thackeray faction may be forced to reconsider its alliance with Congress and the NCP, potentially fracturing the once-powerful coalition. All eyes are now on Thackeray's next move, as the future of the MVA hangs in the balance.
