Maharashtra Cyber Prevents Two Suicide Attempts Linked to Loan App Recovery Harassment
Maharashtra Cyber successfully intervened in two separate suicide attempts linked to cyber blackmail by recovery agents from instant loan apps in Pune, officials reported on Monday. In the first case, a 22-year-old man borrowed Rs 2,800 from a loan app and repaid it. Despite this, he received demands for more money.

After refusing to pay extra, the man was harassed with explicit, altered images of a female relative sent to his family via WhatsApp. Distressed by the situation, he contacted Maharashtra Cyber Helpline Number 14407, expressing suicidal thoughts. A Cyber analyst promptly informed the local police station, leading to swift intervention and prevention of the suicide attempt.
Cyber Blackmailing and Harassment
The second incident involved a 35-year-old man who borrowed Rs 5,060 for medical needs. He initially agreed to an EMI of Rs 1,700, but the loan app unexpectedly doubled the amount. When he refused to pay the increased sum, he faced threats of explicit photos being shared to disgrace him and his family.
Feeling overwhelmed, the man reached out to the cyber helpline, expressing suicidal intentions. The Cyber analyst identified this as severe blackmailing and alerted officials. They met with him and provided necessary counselling support.
Both cases highlight the growing issue of cyber harassment linked to instant loan apps. These incidents underscore the importance of timely intervention by authorities to prevent tragic outcomes. Maharashtra Cyber's prompt actions were crucial in averting potential tragedies in these cases.
The incidents serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance against cyber threats and harassment. Authorities continue to urge individuals facing similar situations to seek help immediately through available helplines.
