Maharashtra Court Orders Walmik Karad to 15-Day Custody in Extortion Case Linked to Murder
A Maharashtra court has remanded Walmik Karad, implicated in an extortion case tied to the murder of a village head, to 15 days in custody. Karad, associated with the murder of Santosh Deshmukh in Beed district, turned himself in to Pune police. Following his surrender, he was taken to a government hospital in Kej before being moved to a police station, according to an official.

The opposition NCP SP criticised the surrender, calling it a staged event and a mockery of the state police. Assistant government pleader JB Shinde informed reporters about the court's decision to detain Karad for 15 days. This period is intended for further investigation and obtaining Karad's voice sample.
Legal Proceedings and Reactions
Karad's lawyer expressed concerns over the charges, stating, "If we see the FIR, the sections that are imposed are inapplicable." The advocate noted that the court had not yet considered their arguments but hoped this might change by the end of the custody period. The lawyer remarked on the unusual nature of granting such extended custody in extortion cases.
The advocate further commented, "I have seen many cases of extortion but never seen such a case where court grants custody of 15 days." They suggested that if someone other than Walmik Karad were involved, bail might have been granted. The situation highlights ongoing debates about legal processes and fairness in high-profile cases.
The case continues to draw attention as authorities work to gather evidence and clarify details surrounding the allegations. The outcome could have significant implications for those involved and may influence public perception of justice in similar cases.
