Maharashtra CM Race: Fadnavis Remains BJP’s Pick: Shinde May Have To Compromise

In a surprising turn of events, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stepped down from his position, sparking wide speculation over who would next hold the state's highest office. This move came amid ongoing discussions within the Mahayuti alliance, primarily focusing on whether Devendra Fadnavis or Eknath Shinde would be appointed as the new Chief Minister. As the process of selecting the new CM unfolds, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clarified its stance, strongly indicating that the strategy employed in Bihar, often referred to as the Bihar formula, would not be applied in Maharashtra.

The BJP's national spokesperson, Prem Shukla, underscored this perspective in statements to the media, explaining the unique circumstances that led to the formation of the alliance in Bihar and its inapplicability to Maharashtra. The alliance with Janata Dal (United) was aimed at expanding the BJP's influence in Bihar, an outcome that did not materialize as anticipated.

Maharashtra CM Race Fadnavis Remains BJP s Pick Shinde May Have To Compromise

Unlike Bihar, where commitments were made before the elections regarding leadership, the BJP made no such promises in Maharashtra. The party's stronger organizational foundation and leadership in Maharashtra negated the need for such commitments, reinforcing the decision not to continue with Eknath Shinde as CM.

The selection process for the new Chief Minister witnessed the involvement of key political figures from the state. Shinde, along with Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief ministers of the previous government, met with Governor CP Radhakrishnan. The Governor requested Shinde to serve in a caretaker capacity until a new chief minister was officially sworn in. This meeting underscored the urgency of appointing a new leader, as the term of the outgoing assembly concluded, and the Mahayuti coalition's strong performance in recent elections only added to the anticipation of Fadnavis's potential selection as the Chief Minister.

The BJP's decision-making process was further complicated by internal dynamics and the expectations set by the election results. The party secured a significant victory, winning 132 out of 288 seats, positioning Fadnavis as a leading candidate for the CM's post. However, the push from Shiv Sena leaders for Shinde to retain the chief ministerial position was met with resistance from the BJP's central leadership. This tension led to the cancellation of a planned show of strength by Sena leaders, with the BJP making it clear that it intended to keep the CM's post.

As discussions progressed, speculation grew about the imminent announcement of Maharashtra's Chief Minister. Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Shirsat hinted that a decision would likely be reached following talks among Shinde, Fadnavis, and Pawar with prominent BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The anticipation was high, with expectations set for a resolution by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

Adding to the political discourse, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale voiced his support for Fadnavis, suggesting the BJP's inclination towards appointing him as Chief Minister for a third term. However, the party remained cautious, opting to withhold any formal announcements until the distribution of ministerial portfolios was finalized. This strategic approach underscored the BJP's intent to carefully navigate the complex political landscape of Maharashtra, ensuring a decision that aligns with the coalition's goals and the party's strategic interests.
