Mahakumbh: Govt Bans Vehicles, VIP Entries As 8 Crore Devotees Expected In Triveni Sangam On Mauni Amavasya

The Mahakumbh 2025, taking place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has become a monumental gathering, attracting over 100 million participants who have participated in the holy rituals at the Triveni Sangam. This confluence, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers meet, is the site for the occasion of Mauni Amavasya. This particular day, which falls on January 29, is anticipated to be the peak of the 45-day spiritual event, drawing an estimated 8 to 10 crore devotees.

To manage the enormous influx of pilgrims effectively, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a series of comprehensive measures. From January 27 to January 30, the vicinity around the festival will be a no-vehicle zone to facilitate pedestrian movement and ensure public safety.

Additionally, the government has stated that VIP protocols will be suspended on January 29, ensuring all devotees have equal access and experience during their visit. This decision highlights the state's commitment to maintaining the sanctity and smooth conduct of this grand religious gathering.

Ensuring Safety and Organization

The Prayagraj administration has taken significant steps to ensure the safety and security of the visitors. Over 50,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed, along with the installation of 2,750 AI-based CCTV cameras to oversee and manage the crowd. To further bolster disaster preparedness, a Multi-Disaster Response vehicle has been readied, showcasing the meticulous planning undertaken to host such a large-scale event safely.

Streamlining Devotee Movement

To accommodate the vast numbers expected on the most auspicious day, Mauni Amavasya, the government has also arranged for 150 special trains. These trains will operate from nine different railway stations in Prayagraj, with departures scheduled every four minutes. This strategic move aims to streamline the flow of pilgrims, ensuring their smooth transit to and from the festival site.

Mauni Amavasya holds profound spiritual importance in the Hindu faith. It is believed that on this day, the alignment of celestial bodies creates the most favorable conditions for bathing in the sacred rivers. The day commemorates the moment when Rishabh Dev, one of the first sages, ended his long silence by bathing in the Sangam's waters. This act of purification attracts the largest number of pilgrims, making it a day of deep spiritual renewal and commitment.

Special Arrangements and Zonal Systems

Vaibhav Krishna, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), told Indian Express, "First of all, we have devised the zonal system, according to which those coming from the Arail side should take a bath at the Arail Ghat and those coming from the Jhusi side should take a bath at Jhusi Ghat and so on. No vehicle movement will be allowed in the Kumbh area from January 27 to January 30. Also, no VIP protocol will be followed on these days." This system not only organizes the flow of devotees but also ensures that the spiritual and cultural essence of the Kumbh Mela is preserved.

The festival has not only drawn immense crowds but also international attention. A 21-member delegation from ten countries took part in the holy dip on January 16, 2025, experiencing the rich spiritual heritage of the Mahakumbh. Their stay was facilitated at the Tent City in Arail, underlining the global appeal and significance of this event.

The Maha Kumbh Mela of 2025 stands as a vibrant testament to India's spiritual heritage and its ability to draw people from all walks of life. As of January 23, 2025, the festival had already seen an unprecedented turnout of over 10 crore devotees. The festival of Makar Sankranti alone witnessed 3.5 crore participants, showcasing the immense devotion and cultural significance of the Mahakumbh. With a total of 45 crore visitors expected, this event not only celebrates spiritual beliefs but also showcases the organizational capabilities of the state and the collective spirit of the people.
