Mahabir Nayak Honoured with Padma Shri for His Dedication to Preserving Jharkhand's Music and Culture
Mahabir Nayak expressed his joy after being named for the Padma Shri award on Saturday. This recognition was for his efforts in preserving Jharkhand's music and culture. He believes this honour will inspire him to continue safeguarding the state's artistic heritage. Nayak is well-known in Jharkhand for his contributions to Bhinsariya raga, Faguwa, Pawas, and Mardani Jhumar ragas in the Nagpuri language.

The 82-year-old poet and songwriter has composed around 500 songs and documented over 1,000 folk songs. "My hard work finally paid off," he stated. He has also penned more than 100 poems, over 100 songs, and several stories. Currently, he is working on a book titled "Geet Mein Swar," which is nearing completion.
Preserving Cultural Heritage
Nayak expressed gratitude to the government for the award, saying it would encourage others like him who are dedicated to preserving art and culture. "It will encourage many people like me who are working to preserve the art and culture," he said. His inspiration for music came from his father, Khudu Nayak, a Jhumar performer from the Ghasi community.
Nayak worked at Ranchi's Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) since 1962 but continued to pursue his passion for music. He urged the younger generation to take an interest in their state's art and culture instead of focusing solely on Bollywood music and DJ songs. "Today's generation is more interested in Bollywood music and dancing to the tune DJ songs," he noted.
Encouraging Youth Engagement
Nayak emphasised the importance of local musical gatherings among generations in every corner of society. He believes these meetings can help people learn about their rich cultural heritage and ensure its preservation. "It will help people know our rich culture and preserve it," he added.
He hopes that such initiatives will inspire young people to appreciate and carry forward their cultural traditions. Nayak's dedication to preserving Jharkhand's musical heritage serves as a beacon for others passionate about protecting their cultural roots.
