Maha Kumbh Mela Administration Raises Boat Fares by 50 Percent to Support Local Boatmen
The Kumbh Mela Administration has decided to increase boatmen's fares by 50% ahead of the Maha Kumbh in January. This decision follows persistent requests from boatmen and discussions between the Prayagraj District Boatmen Association and the Mela administration, as stated by Additional District Magistrate Mahakumbh Vivek Chaturvedi.

Pappu Lal Nishad, President of the Prayagraj District Boatmen Association, welcomed this fare hike. He noted that boat fares had not changed for years despite inflation. He praised the administration's decision as a positive move for the welfare of boatmen.
Boat Fare Transparency and Safety Measures
To ensure transparency, a revised list of boat fares will be displayed at all ghats and parking areas. This measure aims to prevent overcharging of devotees. The administration is also implementing strict measures to maintain fair pricing.
For safety, vehicle movement is restricted, and motorboats are prohibited. Traditional boats are allowed even on major festival days. Sub Divisional Magistrate Mahakumbh Abhinav Pathak mentioned that boat operations during festivals would depend on weather and crowd conditions.
Currently, there are 1,455 boats operating at Sangam. This number is expected to rise to over 4,000 during Mahakumbh as boats from nearby districts join. All boats will undergo safety checks before receiving licenses, ensuring they meet safety standards.
Insurance and Safety Provisions for Boatmen
Life jackets will be provided to all boatmen as part of safety measures. Additionally, each boatman will receive insurance coverage worth ₹2 lakh. These steps aim to enhance safety and security for both boatmen and passengers during the event.
The administration's efforts reflect a commitment to balancing safety with the needs of boatmen and devotees. By addressing fare concerns and implementing safety measures, they aim to ensure a smooth experience for all involved in the Maha Kumbh festivities.
