Thousands gathered on the ghats of Sangam amidst the fog to participate in the holy dip. This location is revered as a sacred meeting point of three significant rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati. The Maha Kumbh is celebrated every 12 years at one of four locations across India.

Significance and Security Measures

Sudha Murty, a Rajya Sabha MP, expressed her joy upon arriving in Prayagraj for the event. She stated, "I am very excited because this is 'Teerthraj'. It (Maha Khumbh) came after 144 years and I am excited, hopeful and extremely happy. I am here for three days." Her visit underscores the event's significance.

The Uttar Pradesh police have ensured security by deploying over 10,000 personnel, including local police and paramilitary forces. Additionally, the National Disaster Response Force has stationed "water ambulances" at Sangam to safeguard devotees during their rituals.

Upcoming Key Dates

The Maha Kumbh commenced on January 13 and will conclude on February 26. Important upcoming dates include January 29 for Mauni Amavasya (Second Shahi Snan), February 3 for Basant Panchami (Third Shahi Snan), February 12 for Maghi Purnima, and February 26 for Maha Shivaratri.

This religious gathering is one of the largest globally and holds immense spiritual significance for participants. As it continues until late February, millions more are expected to partake in this sacred tradition at Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam.
