Madurai International Airport status to support trade, tourism, and stronger air connectivity

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu said Madurai Airport being declared Madurai International Airport will strengthen air connectivity and support trade and tourism in Tamil Nadu. He noted passenger numbers have more than doubled since 2014 and cargo has tripled. A new Air Traffic Control building was inaugurated to help manage higher traffic.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu said Madurai Airport’s new international tag will lift trade, tourism and flights. Ram Mohan Naidu said the change will make the region a stronger economic centre. Ram Mohan Naidu spoke during an event held to rename the airport as Madurai International Airport.

Ram Mohan Naidu said passenger numbers at Madurai Airport have risen sharply since 2014. Ram Mohan Naidu said passenger footfall has more than doubled in that period. Ram Mohan Naidu added that cargo tonnage has tripled. Ram Mohan Naidu said international status will add more air traffic and require stronger systems.

Madurai International Airport status and new ATC building

To handle expected growth, Ram Mohan Naidu said a new ATC Air Traffic Control Building was inaugurated. Ram Mohan Naidu said this support facility will help manage higher flight movements. Ram Mohan Naidu also said the new status will place Madurai more firmly on global air routes. Ram Mohan Naidu said this could draw more airlines and links.

Madurai International Airport and regional trade, tourism impact

Ram Mohan Naidu said the upgrade will change Madurai into a key economic hub. Ram Mohan Naidu linked this to rising trade and stronger tourism flows. Ram Mohan Naidu also said the move would support Madurai’s cultural and spiritual legacy. Ram Mohan Naidu repeated these points in a social media post.

Madurai International Airport renaming and Meenakshi temple visit

Ram Mohan Naidu said, "Today, with the blessings of Meenakshi Amman Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, the decades-old demand of Madurai has been fulfilled with the renaming of Madurai Airport as Madurai International Airport,\". Earlier, after arriving, Ram Mohan Naidu visited Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and offered prayers.

Ram Mohan Naidu said the international label should improve connectivity for Madurai. Ram Mohan Naidu said higher airline interest could follow as routes expand. Ram Mohan Naidu also said the new ATC Air Traffic Control Building will support rising demand. The minister linked the change to growth in tourism, trade, and overall air traffic.
