Madhya Pradesh By-Polls Sees 66% Voter Turnout Amid Booth Capturing Claims

During the recent by-elections in Madhya Pradesh, tensions ran high with allegations of electoral malpractice leading to significant disruptions. In the heart of these disputes, Congress state president Jitu Patwari and BJP state president VD Sharma staged protests near the Election Commission of India's office in Bhopal.

They accused each other of engaging in fake voting and attempting to capture polling booths, a situation that put democracy in the state under scrutiny.

The elections in Budhni and Vijaypur assembly seats were marred by a moderate turnout of 65% and 67%, respectively. The day was filled with mild violence, protests, and allegations, particularly of booth capturing. These incidents occurred amid efforts by voters in various locations, including the tribal voters of Telipura polling booth in Vijaypur, to exercise their democratic rights. They even blocked the Sheopur-Morena road, protesting outside the Veerpur police station against attempts by certain communities to influence the electoral process unfairly.

In response to these chaotic events, Jitu Patwari expressed his concerns on social media, stating, "Democracy is taking its last breath in Madhya Pradesh. The Election Commission is requested to immediately take cognizance of this situation and give the voters an opportunity to exercise their constitutional right." This plea underscored the gravity of the situation and the need for immediate intervention to preserve the sanctity of the electoral process.

Furthermore, in Vijaypur, the tension was palpable with both the forest minister and BJP candidate Ramniwas Rawat and his Congress counterpart Mukesh Malhotra placed under house arrest to maintain law and order. This action was taken as voters from Andhipura and Khadi villages joined those from Telipura in lodging complaints against unfair electoral practices.

Adding to the turmoil, BJP leaders lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer, alleging that supporters of Congress candidate Rajkumar Patel in Budhni were intimidating voters and causing disturbances. Similar accusations were made against Congress workers in Vijaypur, who were reported to have behaved inappropriately with booth-level officers across several locations.

Amid these challenges, Union minister and former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was determined to secure a win for BJP candidate Ramakant Bhargava in Budhni, his home constituency. Meanwhile, in Vijaypur, Ramniwas Rawat, a six-time ex-Congress MLA who switched to the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections and later became forest minister, was fighting to retain his seat.

As the dust settles on these contentious by-elections, the focus shifts to the Election Commission and its role in ensuring a fair and transparent voting process. The incidents in Madhya Pradesh highlight the fragility of democracy when confronted with allegations of electoral malfeasance and the critical need for vigilance and accountability in upholding electoral integrity.
